Hezekiah “Ezekiel” Lard

I believe at this point, Hezekiah Lard is possibly John Lard’s (1792 SC) uncle.  The uncle that John moved to be with when he was about 15 years old – as cited in: Early Settlers of Sangamon County Illinois, 1876, by John Carroll Power: Pg 444 *Problem here is however, the ages don’t align.

I found a written account regarding Hezekiah.

The details of this account are so-so.  I do have question about some of the citations about John Lard – marrying “Lydia” her dying in 1843 – doesn’t fit any records I have found to date.  Still, there does appear to be some good information here.

m. Caty Pursley 01/03/1793, at Bardstown, KY, seat of Nelson County.

1791 list of tithables for Nelson County, KY, before his marriage, he was listed as Hezekiah Leard (sic)

“Ezekiah” Lard’s name appeared on the 1792 list of Nelson County taxpayers and, after marrying Caty Purcell, on annual tax roles from 1793 to 1796 (Hezekiah), indicating, however, he owned no land.  The name of John Lard, Ezekiel’s brother, also was on Nelson County tax lists for 1793, 1794, and 1796.  Neither appeared on the 1797 rolls, and it is clear they had left the country. (other states not yet ratified – Also, the John listed her as Hezekiah’s brother is NOT John Lard 1792 – SC, but would be another Uncle of John Lard in question)

Hezekiah (Ezekiel) Lard (Lord) – (Leard) d. <1799 November 9 Left Nelson county, KY with John Lard (younger brother after 1796 - tax roles) Children reportedly born in Nelson County:

  • Rosannah (b. 1793)
  • Joseph (b.1794)
  • Isaac (b.1794)
  • Lucy (b. 1796)
  • John (b. 1797 – may have been in Spanish Territory)
  • Fielding (b.1799 also Spanish Territory)

09/10/1797 Ezekiel Lard appeared before Upper Louisiana’s Lieutenant Governor, Don Zenon Trudeau, and obtained a concession for 1,000 arpents of land in the Missouri (River) Bottom, near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

Ezekiel Lard died prior to 11/09/1799.  His brother, John Lard, was named administrator of the estate.

“Caty Solivan Pourcelle Lard” remarried Morris James shortly after Ezekiel’s death.

The area known as Bellefontaine, was known more familiarly as Spanish Ponds.

Exerpt: PG2 – Researched & Written for Judith Beckham by Robert E. Parkin, Genealogical R&P

Kentukian Ezekiel Lard… land grant west of the Mississippi – Upper Louisiana..
Ezekiel and Hezekiah were used almost interchangeably for Lard’s given name. However, there is no question it is one and the same person. Ezekiel is used here, when quoting from documents.

Hezekiah Lord and Caty Pursley were married Jan 3, 1793, at Bardstown, Kentucky, seat of Nelson County. – Surety for the marriage was William Owens / Ceremony by Henry Birchett. (Caty was 21 y/o – daughter of Thomas Pursley)

*Questions on this*Exerpt: PG 4 – Unlike Ezekiel, John Lard had little difficulty obtaining confirmation of his claim to 400 arpens… (Benjamin Quick referenced…) John undoubtedly was younger than Ezekiel and apparently did not marry until after the American takeover. His wife’s name was Lydia, and they had at least five children:
Ruthy
Joab
Sarah
Daniel Q. Lard.

After his nephew, Ezekiel’s son John, came of age, he always was referred to as John lard “Sr.” and the younger as John Lard “Jr.” John Lard Sr. died in December, 1825, and his widow, Lydia, died in January, 1843.
